Performing arts for emotional and mental health
Overview
Performing arts initiatives in various regions are being employed as pedagogical and therapeutic tools to address emotional and psychological well-being.
In Mexico and Paraguay, puppet theater companies use performances to engage children with complex themes. In Mexico, Colectivo Cuerda Floja utilizes glove puppets and silhouettes to teach self-esteem and communication. As part of the Revueltas 2026 Festival, the group presented ‘El señor de los dulces’ to address the impact of unhealthy habits on physical and emotional well-being. Similarly, Paraguay’s Kunu’u Títeres, led by artists Tessa Rivarola and Carola Mazzotti, has spent 17 years using puppetry in schools and communities to help children process difficult realities through artistic expression.
In Argentina and Spain, theater supports mental health awareness and medical education. In Mendoza, Argentina, Los Salieris de Chaplin’s production of ‘Prohibido suicidarse en primavera’ explores human fragility and the will to live. In Corrientes, the Capibara Cultural Foundation launched ‘Proyecto Vida: Dramatizaciones temáticas sobre el suicidio adolescente’ to facilitate dialogue and suicide prevention through drama. Additionally, the National University of La Plata’s ‘Salud en Escena’ program, running for 22 years, recently used the play ‘El viaje inconcluso de la tisis’ to explore the social dimensions of tuberculosis. In Sagunt, Spain, the Voramar group premiered Alfred Jarry’s ‘Ubú Rey’ to help individuals with severe psychological issues, such as agoraphobia, engage with social behaviors and community interaction.
