Therapeutic approaches for anxiety and chronic illness
Mental health professionals are highlighting the need for specialized approaches when standard therapy reaches its limits. For individuals with severe anxiety, weekly sessions may become insufficient if symptoms worsen, panic attacks increase in frequency, or avoidance behaviors begin to limit daily functioning in work or social settings. In such cases, more intensive options like Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) or Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) may provide necessary structure.
Additionally, therapy for clients with chronic illness requires a shift in focus. While traditional therapy often aims for symptom reduction, the National Institute of Mental Health notes that goals typically include enhancing daily functioning and quality of life. For those with permanent chronic conditions, an overemphasis on reducing symptoms can lead to shame or hopelessness. Instead, effective support for these individuals focuses on acceptance, self-trust, and improving quality of life even when physical symptoms remain unchanged.
