Thessaloniki court upholds life sentence for Langadikia murder

The Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki has upheld a life sentence for a 41-year-old Turkish national convicted of the murder of a 49-year-old Iraqi national. The incident occurred in early January 2024 in Langadikia, Thessaloniki.

According to court records, the two men appeared to have a friendly relationship and had met outdoors to drink wine and warm themselves by a fire. A dispute broke out, during which the defendant attacked the victim with a knife, inflicting three wounds to the chest, including one to the heart. The force of the attack was such that the knife handle broke off, leaving the blade in the victim's body.

The defendant, an art teacher who had sought asylum in Greece for political reasons, claimed he acted in self-defense. He testified that he was in a state of panic and was attempting to save his own life after the victim grabbed him by the throat.
