Wildfire forces evacuation of Perivolaki, Lagkadas, Greece
A wildfire erupted on the afternoon of 11 July 2026 near the settlement of Perivolaki in the municipality of Lagkadas, Thessaloniki region. The fire burned low‑lying vegetation, dry grasses and waste close to an irrigation channel, prompting the police emergency service 112 to issue two alerts: at 15:27 a standby warning and at 16:23 an order for residents to evacuate to Lagkadas.
Firefighting operations involved 65 firefighters, 20 fire‑engine vehicles, two foot‑patrol teams from the 2nd EMODE, two helicopters and two fixed‑wing aircraft dropping water, as well as water‑tankers from the Central Macedonia region. Drones provided live visual and thermal monitoring for the Unified Command Centre. By the evening the fire was reported to be in decline, though crews remained on site to prevent re‑ignition and the arson crimes unit was activated to investigate the cause.
No casualties were reported, but the incident highlighted the rapid response of local emergency services to protect the settlement and surrounding farmland.
