Thessaloniki infrastructure: Helexpo redevelopment and transport upgrades discussed

Greek government officials held meetings to discuss major infrastructure and transportation developments in Northern Greece, specifically focusing on Thessaloniki.

Regarding the Helexpo redevelopment, Deputy Minister of Interior Konstantinos P. Gioulekas met with Helexpo Board Chairman Christos Tsemetidis. The project aims to modernize the exhibition center by constructing two large, contemporary buildings totaling 40,500 square meters. To ensure continuity, the exhibition center will remain fully operational during construction. The plan also includes the creation of a Metropolitan Park to serve as a green space for Thessaloniki.

In a separate discussion regarding urban transport, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Giorgos Kotsiras and Deputy Minister Gioulekas reviewed railway projects and public transit in Macedonia and Thrace. Key topics included the modernization of the railway network and the expansion of the suburban railway on the western side of Thessaloniki. Additionally, officials discussed the renewal of the Thessaloniki Urban Bus Service (OASTH) fleet, noting that two-thirds of the fleet has been updated, including the recent acquisition of 50 new electric buses.
