Kalochori industrial fire in Thessaloniki remains under control
A large fire broke out on 9 July 2026 in the industrial area of Kalochori, Thessaloniki, after a 70‑year‑old man used a naked flame to remove wasps, igniting dry grass, pallets and plastic. Strong firefighting forces – up to 30 firefighters, 9‑12 fire engines and two helicopters (later withdrawn) – contained the blaze within the plant, preventing spread to nearby residential zones. The incident prompted a 112 alert urging residents to stay indoors with doors and windows closed. Police arrested the suspect on the spot and imposed an administrative fine of €5,886.56 for arson by negligence. The fire is now partially under control, with investigations by the Fire Service’s Arson Investigation Unit ongoing.
