Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Aggeloudis Secures 120‑acre Metropolitan Park

Mayor Stelios Aggeloudis announced that the Thessaloniki Municipal Council is considering a contract to hand over parts of municipal property for the creation of a 120‑acre Metropolitan Park at the historic D.E.T.H. site. The agreement provides a legally binding framework that guarantees the park’s green space, limits new construction to two exhibition buildings, includes 1,000 underground parking spaces and upgrades the Ioannis Vellidis Conference Centre. The park will be publicly funded, open to all, and maintained by the D.E.T.H., with strict safeguards to prevent future alterations. Aggeloudis called the decision “historical” for the city’s centre and highlighted that the previous plan allowed only 60 acres of green space with extensive building.

The contract also revokes real‑estate uses, sharply reduces the building footprint, and includes legal instruments—deed registration, lease termination and modifications to the Special Urban Planning Plan—to protect the park’s future.
