Thessaloniki Metro expands to Kalamaria with five new stations
The Thessaloniki Metro has officially expanded its network to Kalamaria, adding five new stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra. The 4.8-kilometer underground extension began commercial operations on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following an inauguration ceremony attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The new branch connects the Kalamaria area directly to the city center, with travel times from Mikra to the New Railway Station estimated at 24 to 26 minutes. Officials expect the extension to serve between 63,000 and 80,000 passengers daily and reduce vehicle traffic in the city center by approximately 12,000 to 15,000 cars per day.
The extension integrates into the existing automated, driverless system. Trains will run approximately every 3 minutes on the central trunk and every 4.5 minutes on the Kalamaria branch. Following this milestone, the government has announced plans to prioritize further expansions toward the northwestern suburbs of Thessaloniki, including potential new lines toward Stavroupoli and Evosmos.
