Thessaloniki infrastructure: Flyover project reaches 62% completion

Major infrastructure projects in Thessaloniki are progressing, including the Flyover elevated highway and expansions to the Thessaloniki Metro. Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas reported that the Flyover project is approximately 62% complete, with a target delivery date in the second quarter of 2027. Once finished, the highway is expected to double vehicle capacity from 5,000 to 10,000 vehicles per hour.

Regarding public transit, ONNED Thessaloniki has proposed 24-hour weekend operations for the Thessaloniki Metro to improve safety and mobility, particularly for young citizens. The Minister noted that 24-hour operations have been piloted and are scheduled for the first two weekends of September during the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair. The Metro's expansion toward Kalamaria is also underway, which is estimated to remove 12,000 vehicles from the roads daily and add 60,000 daily passengers.

Additionally, the city is integrating 50 new electric articulated buses into the OASTH fleet to modernize public transport and enhance environmental sustainability.
