Thessaloniki Metro expansion to Kalamaria enters final phase
The expansion of the Thessaloniki Metro toward Kalamaria is entering its final phase. Test runs are currently underway, with a focus on final testing and certification processes. Commercial operations for the new line are expected to begin within August.
The expansion consists of approximately 4.8 kilometers of underground track and includes five new stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra. Once operational, the total Thessaloniki Metro network will comprise 18 stations, aimed at enhancing public transport on the eastern side of the city and reducing road traffic toward the center.
Following the completion of the Kalamaria line, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and Elliniko Metro are accelerating plans for the next major phase, which will target the city's densely populated western suburbs. Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos recently inspected the new stations and held meetings with Elliniko Metro officials, construction companies, and the operating company THEMA to coordinate the final stages of the project.
