Thessaloniki Metro expansion to Kalamaia set for August 27 opening
The Thessaloniki Metro expansion to Kalamaia is scheduled to begin commercial operations on August 27. This new 4.8-kilometer underground extension adds five new stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaia, Aretsou, Nea Krini, and Mikra. Once operational, the total network will consist of 18 stations.
Officials, including Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas and Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos, confirmed that trial runs are currently underway. These tests are essential for safety certification, which includes technical documentation and verification by TÜV Rheinland. Tachiaos noted that the project faced complexities due to incomplete original designs and technical challenges, such as software upgrades and signal congestion between new trains and the existing control center.
The expansion is expected to serve approximately 80,000 passengers daily and reduce city traffic by an estimated 12,000 cars per day. Following the Kalamaia completion, authorities are shifting focus toward planning future extensions to Northwest Thessaloniki to create a more comprehensive metropolitan network.
