Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria opens July, Flyover due May 2027

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Takhias announced that the Thessaloniki Metro extension to the Kalamaria district is scheduled to enter service by the end of July. The project adds new stations at Ampelokipoi, Menemeni, Euosmo, Kordelio, Neapoli, Stavroupoli and Evkarpia as part of a western expansion, with an estimated cost of about €1 billion.

The same official said the city’s elevated Flyover, a separate traffic‑relief structure, is on track for completion in May 2027. Funding for both initiatives is expected to come largely from European Union sources, reflecting the EU’s support for major urban transport upgrades.

Plans for a circular metro line have been abandoned, and attention is now on the two new lines. Takhias also noted that the proposed metro link to Macedonia Airport is not justified by current passenger demand. He highlighted a push for integrated ticketing between the metro and the regional bus operator OASTH, where the current fare of €0.60 is considered low relative to service levels. Additional infrastructure work includes tunnel certification and maintenance on the Egnatia Odos highway, but these are separate from the metro projects.
