Thessaloniki private clinic faces investigation over unlicensed oncology unit

A private clinic in Thessaloniki is facing severe scrutiny following revelations from the National Transparency Authority (EAD) that it operated an unlicensed oncology department. Investigations found that the facility provided chemotherapy treatments without the required legal authorization and lacked a mandatory Intensive Care Unit. Furthermore, reports suggest that patients without cancer diagnoses were receiving chemotherapy, potentially involving fraudulent claims to EOPYY for reimbursements.

The Regional Authority has revoked the operating licenses for the Thessaloniki facility and a second structure owned by the same entrepreneur in Thermi, ordering an evacuation within 15 days. Despite these orders, reports indicate the clinic remains operational with staff and patients still on-site.

Numerous relatives of former patients have come forward with harrowing testimonies regarding substandard care. Allegations include severe staff shortages, medication errors, and extreme neglect leading to dehydration and coma-like states. One relative described the facility as an ‘executioner,’ reporting that a patient transferred for physiotherapy returned with severe respiratory and urinary tract infections. The case has been referred to the Prosecutor to investigate both the medical practices and the systemic failure of oversight mechanisms.
