Thessaloniki social housing project converts public offices into homes

Domna Michailidou, the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, visited a new social housing project in Thessaloniki that converts public buildings into residential spaces for vulnerable groups. The project, part of the ‘Social Housing for the Most Vulnerable Groups’ initiative, involved transforming a 330-square-meter municipal office building at 59 Alexandrias Street into six independent apartments.

The conversion was funded with 1,110,000 euros from the Recovery and Resilience Facility in cooperation with the European Commission. The new residences have already been leased to vulnerable households, primarily single-person occupants aged between 25 and 63 who previously faced housing and employment insecurity.

During the visit, Michailidou was accompanied by Mario Nava, Director-General of the European Commission's DG EMPL, and Cristiana Costinescu, Head of the Greece and Cyprus Unit of DG EMPL. The Minister emphasized that the goal is to increase the available housing stock by repurposing public assets to provide stability for those in need.
