Social housing and economic reform in Greece
Overview
Efforts regarding social housing and economic reform in Greece have progressed through both direct implementation and political proposals.
In Thessaloniki, the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, oversaw the completion of a project that converted a 330-square-meter municipal office building into six independent apartments. Funded with 1,110,000 euros from the Recovery and Resilience Facility in cooperation with the European Commission, the initiative provides housing for vulnerable single-person occupants.
Concurrently, the SYRIZA-PS political party has proposed a broader structural reform to transform the EFKA (All-time Social Security Fund) into a ‘Social Investment Fund’. This proposal aims to create over 300,000 social housing units and utilize properties from private funds to secure pensions. The plan seeks to recover approximately 14 billion euros lost during the 2012 debt restructuring through state guarantees and cooperation with the Development Bank of Greece.
