Thessaloniki infrastructure: Suburban railway and port connection project nears contractor selection

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Giorgos Kotsiras, announced that the technical evaluation of two bids for the Western Thessaloniki Suburban Railway and the connection of the Thessaloniki Port's 6th pier to the national network is nearing completion. The selection of a contractor is expected shortly, with the goal of signing the contract within 2026. Once construction begins, the project is estimated to take 36 months to complete.

Kotsiras highlighted that Thessaloniki is a central focus of government transportation initiatives. Beyond the suburban railway, ongoing improvements include the expansion of the Thessaloniki Metro toward Kalamaria, the introduction of 50 new electric buses to the city's fleet, and upgrades to the tram system.

Additionally, the Minister noted broader railway upgrades in Northern Greece, specifically targeting the Thessaloniki–Sidirokastro, Mouriés–Promachonas, and Alexandroupoli–Ormenio lines to strengthen connections with neighboring countries. Similar fleet renewal efforts are also underway in Attica, involving the addition of 125 new buses.
