Pylaia fire in Thessaloniki threatens homes, forces evacuations
A wildfire broke out on the afternoon of 26 July 2026 in low vegetation near scattered residences in the Pylaia district of Thessaloniki. The Fire Service Operations Center was alerted around 16:50‑16:58 and initially deployed 27 firefighters with 12 vehicles. Reinforcements soon raised the force to 72 firefighters, 20 vehicles, three EMODE foot‑patrol groups, volunteers and European firefighters under a pre‑deployment program. Aerial assets consisted of four helicopters and three fixed‑wing aircraft.
Two 112 alerts were issued: the first at 16:58 warned residents to stay on high alert, and a second at 17:12 ordered evacuation of people near the Music School, directing them toward the centre of Pylaia. The Civil Protection Authority urged continued high‑alert status. An arson‑crime investigation unit was activated to determine the fire’s cause.
A separate, smaller blaze was reported in the Monolofo area of Oraiokastro, Thessaloniki, involving 37 firefighters, two EMODE groups, 11 vehicles, two helicopters and three aircraft; no homes were threatened there. The Pylaia fire was later reported to be improving thanks to the extensive firefighting effort.
