Overview

The wildfire surge that began on 22 July 2026 continued across Central Macedonia, with dozens of agricultural‑forest fires recorded through the end of the month. The largest blaze in Derbeni (Oraiokastro) required 120 firefighters, 33 engines, aerial support and EU‑deployed Moldovan crews. On the afternoon of 26 July a fast‑moving fire erupted in low‑vegetation hills south of the Pylaia district, near the local music school and nearby residences. The Fire Service Operations Center was alerted around 16:50‑16:58 and first dispatched 27 firefighters with 12 engines. Reinforcements soon raised the effort to 72 firefighters, 20 engines, three EMODE foot‑patrol groups, volunteers and European crews under a pre‑deployment programme. Aerial assets included four helicopters and three fixed‑wing water‑dropping aircraft. Two 112 alerts were issued: the first at 16:58 warning residents to stay on high alert, the second at 17:12 ordering evacuation of the Music School area. Police rescued three people trapped by the flames and an arson‑crime investigation unit was activated.

A parallel blaze burned in Monolofo (Oraiokastro) involving 37 firefighters, two EMODE groups, 11 vehicles, two helicopters and three aircraft, but no homes were threatened. The Civil Protection Authority maintained a high‑alert status, and by the following day the Pylaia fire was reported to be improving thanks to the extensive firefighting effort.
