Thessaly Governor Dimitris Koureta pushes fast compensation for hail‑damaged farmers
Regional officials in Thessaly met with the mayor of Tyrnavos and the president of the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) to address the extensive damage caused by the July 2026 hailstorms. The gathering, led by Governor Dimitris Koureta, highlighted severe losses to vineyards, orchards and annual crops across the municipalities of Tyrnavos, Elassona and Kilkis.
The participants presented a set of proposals aimed at accelerating compensation: immediate completion of damage assessments, prompt advance payments, and full 100 % reimbursement under the recent legislative amendment that removed any ceiling on insured value. Additional measures include income‑loss support for tree‑crop producers, activation of EU Regulation 78a for emergency income aid, and a boost to the P3‑73‑2.5 protection programme to fund anti‑hail nets and related protective infrastructure.
The meeting sought to secure rapid financial relief for affected farmers and to implement permanent safeguards for agricultural production in the hail‑prone areas of Thessaly.
