Thessaly Governor seeks compensation for crop damage
The Regional Governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas, has formally requested compensation for farmers in the Larissa and Karditsa (Palama area) regional units following significant crop damage during the 2025 growing season.
In a letter to Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schoinas, Kouretas highlighted that a lack of irrigation water, combined with high temperatures and drought conditions, severely impacted cotton, industrial tomato, and corn crops. In Larissa alone, approximately 3,000 acres of cotton and industrial tomato crops suffered substantial production losses due to the inability to provide adequate irrigation during critical growth stages in July 2025.
The Governor noted that rising production costs and decreased yields have made these crops economically unviable for many producers, emphasizing the ongoing impact of the climate crisis on the region's agriculture.
