Greece police issue 1,700+ helmet violations in nationwide safety campaign
The Hellenic Police have conducted a nationwide enforcement campaign titled ‘Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets’ during the week of September 21 to September 27, 2026. Across Greece, authorities performed 20,024 inspections, resulting in 1,727 violations by drivers and 211 violations by passengers.
Violations included 1,058 motorcycle riders, 648 users of light personal electric vehicles (LPEVs), and 21 ATV drivers. Regional data shows Attica recorded the highest number of violations with 602, followed by the South Aegean with 354, the Ionian Islands with 243, and Western Greece with 200.
Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), penalties have been intensified. Motorcycle riders failing to wear a helmet face a 350-euro fine and a 30-day driving license suspension. Passengers also face a 350-euro fine, while LPEV drivers are subject to a 30-euro fine. The police stated the campaign aims to change driver perception and promote helmet use as a vital life-saving measure rather than merely enforcing penalties.
