Thilamalé Bridge reaches major milestone connecting Malé and Villimalé
The Thilamalé Bridge project has reached a major milestone with the scheduled installation of the final segment connecting Malé and Villimalé. Afcons Infrastructure, the Indian firm contracted for the work, announced that the installation of this final piece marks the completion of the bridge's superstructure.
While the main framework will be structurally connected, public access will not be granted immediately. Finishing works, including the installation of lighting and safety railings, must be completed before the bridge opens to traffic. The project is part of the broader Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP), which aims to enhance transport links between Malé, Villingili, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi.
Financed by a USD 400 million loan from the Exim Bank of India, the project has faced several delays since the agreement was signed in August 2021. Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid described the development as a symbol of the robust bilateral ties and trust between the Maldives and India.
