Thilamalé Bridge construction in the Maldives
Overview
The Thilamalé Bridge project, a key component of the Greater Male Connectivity Project, has reached a significant milestone with the scheduled installation of its final segment. This installation completes the bridge’s superstructure, connecting Malé and Villimalé. The project is being executed by the Indian firm Afcons Infrastructure and is financed by a USD 400 million loan from the Exim Bank of India.
While the superstructure is nearing completion, public access remains pending the installation of safety railings, lighting, and other finishing works. President Mohamed Muizzu has indicated that the bridge is expected to open to the public within one year. He noted that the Ministry of Infrastructure is monitoring progress via a high-level bilateral committee, with oversight provided by the international firm AECOM to ensure quality.
