Third Age University programs launch for seniors in Turkey

Educational initiatives known as ‘Third Age University’ are being implemented to support healthy aging and lifelong learning for citizens aged 60 and older in Turkey.

In Izmir, a program organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in collaboration with the Ege Geriatric Association has entered its final term. Students receive training in diverse subjects including healthy nutrition, psychology, law, exercise, cybercrime, and consumer rights. The initiative aims to keep participants mentally and physically active, with graduates expected to serve as health volunteers.

In Erzurum, Health Sciences University is launching a similar 20-week program at the Erzurum Faculty of Medicine. This curriculum focuses on practical health knowledge, such as first aid, managing chronic diseases in old age, conscious medication use, and scientific literacy. The program aims to foster social interaction and provide practical tools for maintaining a healthy lifestyle without the pressure of formal exams or grades.
