Elderly education and health initiatives in Turkey
Overview
Municipalities and academic institutions in Turkey are expanding programs focused on lifelong learning and healthy aging for senior citizens.
In İzmir, the municipalities of Bornova and Güzelbahçe have launched new academic terms for their ‘3rd Age University’ programs. Supported by the Ege Geriatri Association, these initiatives offer activities such as rhythm training and social responsibility projects. In Bornova, the 2026-2027 academic year commenced at the Altındağ Atatürk Culture Center, where participants received Health Support Cards for medical facility discounts. Bornova Mayor Ömer Eşki stated the project opposes a culture that sidelines the elderly. In Güzelbahçe, the program has entered its second education term following a May 2026 graduation, with sessions scheduled to continue until January 20, 2027.
Broader regional efforts continue to evolve. In İzmir, a program organized by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and the Ege Geriatric Association has entered its final term, offering training in subjects ranging from healthy nutrition and psychology to cybercrime and consumer rights. Graduates are expected to serve as health volunteers.
In Erzurum, the Health Sciences University is launching a 20-week program at the Erzurum Faculty of Medicine. This curriculum for individuals aged 60 and older focuses on practical health knowledge, including first aid, managing chronic diseases, and scientific literacy, aiming to foster social interaction without the pressure of formal exams.
