The Outer Melbourne Councils (OMC) has expressed support for a $607 million commitment pledged by the Coalition to upgrade and extend Thompsons Road. The project is intended to transform the road into a major cross-metropolitan transport corridor.

According to the OMC, the upgrade is a critical priority for Melbourne’s south-east, aimed at supporting freight movement, industrial growth, and economic development. Acting OMC Chair Naomi Joiner stated that the investment is necessary to keep pace with rapid population growth in the outer suburbs and to improve connectivity for local communities.

The OMC has included the Thompsons Road Upgrade and Extension as a priority in its 2026 State Election Platform and is now calling on the Victorian Government to match the commitment.
