Thong Nhat Hospital performs first successful liver transplant

Thong Nhat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has successfully performed its first living-donor liver transplant, marking its entry into the city’s liver transplant network. The procedure was conducted on August 22 with professional support from 108 Military Central Hospital.

The recipient, a 50-year-old patient suffering from liver cancer, cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis B and C, and type 2 diabetes, received a liver graft from his 29-year-old brother. The operation involved a multidisciplinary team using two operating rooms simultaneously to perform the graft removal and the recipient's diseased liver removal.

Medical specialists determined that transplantation was the most appropriate treatment to extend the patient's life and improve his quality of life following complications such as ascites and gastrointestinal bleeding.
