Seven alpinists killed on Gran Paradiso and nearby Alpine peaks

Over a 24‑hour period in the Alps, seven climbers lost their lives in separate accidents on Gran Paradiso, the Cervino and the Monte Bianco massifs. The first crash occurred on the north wall of Gran Paradiso, where three Italian alpinists were found dead after a presumed slip caused a group fall. Subsequent incidents involved an alpinist recovered by a Swiss helicopter on the Cervino, and two fatalities on the French side of Monte Bianco’s Kuffner ridge. Rescue authorities emphasized that weather conditions were generally good and warned about the need for proper rope technique and team coordination.

In the same days, several non‑fatal rescues were carried out in the Italian Dolomites and the Apennines. Teams from the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino and Speleologico responded to injuries on the Val Maggiore gorge, a shoulder injury on a trail near Cortina d’Ampezzo, a fall on the “Bosco delle Api” path near Santa Sofia, and a complex operation rescuing hikers in the Sirente‑Velino park and the Gole del Salinello in Abruzzo. All victims were evacuated by helicopter and received medical care.

Authorities highlighted the importance of rapid reporting, the coordination of alpine rescue units, and public awareness of mountain safety, especially as the summer climbing season intensifies.
