Three Firefighters Killed in Colorado‑Utah Border Wildfire Honored at Memorial

Emily Barker (38), Nick Hutcherson (27) and Sydney Watson (27) died on Saturday, June 27, while battling fast‑moving wildfires in Mesa County on the Colorado‑Utah border. The three were members of a U.S. Wildland Fire Service Helitack crew that can be inserted into remote areas by helicopter. They deployed emergency protective shelters, a last‑resort safety measure, before being overcome by the flames; two other crew members sustained burn injuries.

The deaths come amid a severe western wildfire season driven by months of dry weather and a record lack of snow, forcing many residents to evacuate. The tragedy echoed the 2013 Yarnell Hill fire that claimed 19 firefighters. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Las Colonias Park Amphitheater in Grand Junction, Colorado, to honor the fallen and recognize their contributions to fire‑fighting and community safety.
