Thrill of Driving study identifies science behind driving emotions
A new independent study titled ‘Thrill of Driving’ has explored the physiological science behind the emotional experience of driving. Conducted at Palmer Sport in Bedfordshire, England, the research analyzed brain, ocular, cardiac, and skin activity to determine what triggers the sensation of a ‘thrill’ behind the wheel.
Findings suggest that the thrill of driving is driven by a sense of controlled engagement rather than pure speed. The emotion stems from the convergence of three key factors: visceral stimulation (mental and physical), intellectual involvement (mental engagement with the task), and emotional balance (the equilibrium between excitement and fear).
Data analysis, provided by the neuroscience company Brainbox, indicates that if any of these factors exceed a driver’s perceived threshold of control, the experience shifts from a thrill to fear, resulting in irregular stress indicators such as heart rate and eye movement. The study noted that even at modest speeds, such as in technical karting sessions, the necessary visceral, intellectual, and emotional thresholds can be met to generate intense emotion through controlled immersion.
