Thriving Kids program begins rollout for disability supports
The Thriving Kids program has officially begun its rollout, marking the first phase of a broader transition toward Foundational Supports for disability services outside the NDIS. The program is designed to assist children aged eight and under who have autism or developmental delays and possess low to moderate support needs. Unlike the NDIS, Thriving Kids will not provide individual funding; instead, services such as information, advice, and allied health will be delivered through community and government providers.
While the rollout is expected to be complete by January 1, 2028, advocacy groups have raised concerns regarding the scope of the program. Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA) noted that while the focus is on young children, there remains significant uncertainty regarding what supports will be available for individuals aged nine and older. WWDA CEO Sophie Cusworth emphasized the need for reliable services and highlighted the potential for increased pressure on disabled parents, particularly women, if gaps in support are not addressed.
