Turkey warns of extreme heat and heavy rain in several regions

The Meteorology General Directorate (MGM) issued a weather forecast for 16 July 2026 indicating a dual threat across Turkey. Temperatures are expected to climb to 41 °C in southeastern Anatolia and the Aegean, with cities such as Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Mardin and Aydın among the hottest. At the same time, the eastern Black Sea coast – especially the eastern districts of Trabzon and the Rize area – is forecast to receive local heavy to very heavy rain (30‑70 kg / m²). A yellow‑code alert was issued for these areas, warning of floods, flash‑floods, lightning and landslide risk.

Strong winds of 40‑60 km/h are also expected in the south‑west of the Marmara region and the northern and coastal Aegean, prompting warnings about possible transport disruptions and damage to outdoor objects. Local authorities urged residents to stay informed, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take precautions against flooding and landslides.

Geology expert Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş highlighted the heightened landslide danger in the steep northern slopes of Trabzon and Rize, calling for detailed geotechnical assessments and proper drainage planning. Separate regional forecasts reported temperatures of 34‑35 °C in Bursa, up to 40 °C in Konya, and 30‑33 °C in Istanbul, all above seasonal norms.
