BSW parliamentary group in Thuringia collapses amid leadership rift

The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) is facing a major political crisis in Thuringia as nearly its entire state parliamentary group has defected from the party. Ten of the 12 remaining BSW members in the Thuringian parliament announced their departure, including all three BSW ministers serving in the state government: Deputy Minister-President and Finance Minister Katja Wolf, Digital Minister Steffen Schütz, and Environment Minister Tilo Kummer.

The mass exodus follows a deep rift between the Thuringian state branch and the federal leadership led by party founder Sahra Wagenknecht. The Thuringian members cited interference from the federal leadership and a lack of political direction as primary reasons for leaving. In response, three defecting members, Stefan Wogawa, Dirk Hoffmeister, and Roberto Kobelt, have founded a new party called ‘Deine Stimme zählt’.

Despite the party collapse, the defecting MPs intend to remain in their parliamentary group to continue supporting the ‘Blackberry Coalition’—a minority government composed of the CDU, SPD, and the former BSW members. Thuringian Minister-President Mario Voigt (CDU) and Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) expressed confidence that the coalition can remain stable. Sahra Wagenknecht has criticized the departures as a calculated attempt to damage the party before upcoming elections, while admitting that the party made mistakes by entering government too early.
