Thuringia reports mixed nitrate levels in groundwater

Nitrate levels in the groundwater of Thuringia remain a significant concern. Recent analyses indicate that one in five private well samples tested showed excessively high nitrate concentrations.

The Thuringian Ministry of the Environment reports a general trend of declining nitrate values at approximately 28 monitoring stations across the state, though levels have worsened at nine locations. The Thuringian Farmers' Association attributes high levels in certain areas to historical agricultural practices from the GDR era, when soil was over-fertilized with nutrients. While modern fertilization is more targeted, nitrate continues to leach into the groundwater. Additionally, the Ministry noted that frequent periods of drought can increase nitrate concentrations by reducing the overall volume of water available.
