Environmental and water quality issues in Thuringia

Overview

Thuringia has faced significant environmental challenges regarding water and soil conditions. In early September, the state experienced moderate to severe drought, affecting approximately 55 to 60 percent of its area. While some regions received average rainfall, deeper soil layers remained dry, posing risks to corn production and cattle fodder.

By late September, concerns shifted toward groundwater quality. While the Thuringian Ministry of the Environment noted a general declining trend in nitrate values at most monitoring stations, levels worsened at nine locations. One in five private well samples tested showed excessively high nitrate concentrations. Officials noted that frequent drought periods can exacerbate this issue by increasing nitrate concentrations through reduced water volume. The Thuringian Farmers' Association attributed high levels in certain areas to historical over-fertilization practices from the GDR era.
