Thuringia tornado confirmed with wind speeds up to 300 km/h

The German Weather Service (DWD) has confirmed that a tornado struck the region around Ohrdruf in Thuringia, causing severe damage. Wind speeds during the event are estimated to have reached between 200 and 300 kilometers per hour.

Experts suggest the tornado had a strength of at least F2 on the international Fujita scale, though investigations into the exact intensity are ongoing. The storm, which occurred approximately one week ago, resulted in significant destruction to buildings, trees, and infrastructure. In the Gotha district, one person was killed after being struck by falling tree parts.

Cleanup efforts are currently underway in several locations, including Ohrdruf, Bad Liebenstein, and Dermbach. Forestry companies and local authorities are working to clear fallen trees and secure hazardous areas. Due to the damage, the Altenstein Castle Park in Bad Liebenstein remains completely closed to visitors.
