Thuringian BSW splits over AfD outreach as membership falls

The Thuringian branch of Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) is embroiled in a dispute after the federal party leadership sent a letter offering joint campaign appearances with the AfD. State officials such as parliamentary manager Stefan Wogawa condemned the move as a “political total failure,” arguing it signals an unwanted proximity to the far‑right party and calls for a return to clear, issue‑based policies. Infrastructure minister Steffen Schütz also expressed outrage at what he described as constant attacks from the federal leadership.

During the same period the party’s membership in Thuringia has shrunk sharply. About 200 members left in the first half of 2026, bringing the total to roughly 570, down from around 770 in November 2025. The decline is attributed to delayed processing of new applications, relocations and natural attrition. The internal conflict over who may admit new members has further complicated recruitment efforts.
