Tibetan Youth Congress launches hunger strike against China from Dharamshala

The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) began a worldwide chain protest on Sunday from Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, with a 24‑hour hunger strike. The strike honors the late activist Lobga Rangzen, who self‑immolated outside the United Nations in New York on July 2, and protests China’s newly enacted Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law that took effect on July 1.

TYC officials said the campaign will involve coordinated demonstrations, candlelight vigils, public rallies, awareness drives and diplomatic outreach in cities such as Delhi, New York and other locations worldwide. The organization intends the protest to draw international attention to the human‑rights situation in Tibet and to resist what it calls state‑enforced assimilation.

“With this hunger strike we want to pay our tribute… and convey the message to the Chinese Communist Government that the Tibetan people will continue to resist until our rightful freedom is restored,” said former TYC president and MP Gonpo Dhundup.
