Tibetan protests against Chinese assimilation laws

Tibetan activists have initiated a series of hunger strikes and protests to oppose China’s newly enacted Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, which took effect on July 1. Protesters claim the law threatens Tibetan language, religion, and culture through state-enforced assimilation.

In mid-July, the Tibetan Youth Congress launched a worldwide chain protest from Dharamshala, India, including a 24-hour hunger strike. This campaign also serves to honor Lobga Rangzen, an activist who self-immolated outside the United Nations in New York on July 2. The organization planned coordinated demonstrations and diplomatic outreach in various global cities to highlight human rights issues in Tibet.

By mid-August, the movement continued with approximately 50 members of the Tibetan community, including the Regional Tibetan Women’s Association, conducting a 24-hour hunger strike and peace protest in Shimla, India. These demonstrations maintained the dual focus of resisting the new Chinese law and commemorating Rangzen.
