Tierra del Fuego household delinquency exceeds national average

Argentina is facing rising household delinquency rates, with Tierra del Fuego reporting a significantly higher rate of 19% compared to the national average of 13%. In response, the provincial government is promoting a debt refinancing program through the Banco de Tierra del Fuego (BTF). However, economist Federico Rayes has raised concerns regarding the fiscal cost of these measures and the bank's declining liquidity and operational losses.

Nationally, the Central Bank reported household delinquency at 12.94% in July. While some market sources suggest a slight reduction in delinquency for August, the situation remains critical for smaller fintechs and installment sales. The national government, including Economy Minister Luis Caputo, has maintained that debt issues are private matters and has declined to provide state-funded assistance to debtors, emphasizing that banks are already working to refinance clients at lower rates.

Labor organizations and various provinces have taken different stances, with some provinces launching their own refinancing plans. Meanwhile, economic reports suggest that much of the current debt is being used to cover basic necessities rather than discretionary spending.
