Tierra del Fuego cost of living and rising debt crisis

Economic data indicates that the cost of living in Tierra del Fuego significantly exceeds the national poverty threshold. Families in the province require approximately 60% more income than the national average to avoid poverty.

While the monthly income needed for a four-person household to exceed the poverty threshold in Greater Buenos Aires is $1,498,741, local estimates for Tierra del Fuego exceed $2.4 million. This gap is attributed to high costs for housing, services, and transportation, alongside geographic isolation. Rental costs are a major factor; in Ushuaia, two-bedroom apartments can reach $1.2 million per month, while the provincial average for apartments is approximately $822,659. In Tolhuin, rents are around $550,000, and prices in Río Grande also represent a substantial portion of family budgets.

Recent data shows that household delinquency in Tierra del Fuego has reached 19%, significantly higher than the national average of 13%. Reports suggest much of this debt is being used to cover basic necessities rather than discretionary spending. In response, the provincial government is promoting a debt refinancing program through the Banco de Tierra del Fuego (BTF). However, economist Federico Rayes has raised concerns regarding the fiscal cost of these measures, noting the bank’s declining liquidity and operational losses. While some provinces have launched their own refinancing plans, the national government has maintained that debt issues are private matters and has declined to provide state-funded assistance to debtors.
