South American regions implement wildfire prevention measures

Multiple regions in South America are facing heightened wildfire risks due to seasonal changes and dry conditions.

In Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, a high-danger season has commenced, running through March 31. Authorities have prohibited open fires except in officially designated areas to prevent emergencies.

In Jujuy, Argentina, the Ministry of Environment reported 101 forest fires in September alone, affecting 523 hectares. This brings the 2026 total to 245 fires and 1,785 hectares burned. Officials are urging residents to clear dry vegetation from urban interfaces to protect homes.

In San Juan, Argentina, the presence of Zonda winds has prompted warnings against burning vegetation due to the risk of rapid fire spread.

In Magallanes, Chile, agricultural officials are reviewing prevention and monitoring capacities, including coordination with CONAF to prepare for the upcoming fire season and protect subantarctic flora.

In Junín, Peru, ongoing fires have affected various districts, including Hualhuas and El Tambo, impacting pastures, crops, and livestock, with some incidents suspected to be intentional.
