South American wildfire prevention and management

Overview

South American regions, particularly in Argentina, Chile, and Peru, are implementing various measures to manage heightened wildfire risks. In Argentina, authorities in Tierra del Fuego have prohibited open fires, while Jujuy reported 101 forest fires in September 2026. In San Juan, Zonda winds have increased the risk of rapid fire spread. In Peru, fires in Junín have impacted crops and livestock, with some incidents suspected to be intentional.

Efforts to manage these risks have expanded to include international cooperation and local coordination. Argentina’s Neuquén province is set to host the ‘Patagonia, beyond fire’ congress, bringing together specialists from Argentina, Chile, Canada, and Spain to discuss prevention and technological innovation. In Chile, the municipality of San Fernando is reinforcing its prevention strategies for the 2026-2027 season by coordinating with emergency services and focusing on community education and firebreak maintenance in high-risk areas.
