Tigray leadership reports no progress from Obasanjo mediation visit
Tigray leadership has expressed frustration following a visit to Mekelle by African Union High Representative Olusegun Obasanjo on August 24. The leadership stated the visit yielded no new proposals or evidence of tangible progress from the Ethiopian Federal Government.
The Tigray authorities have outlined several preconditions for resuming formal dialogue. These include lifting the current economic blockade, ending the military siege, de-escalating regional tensions, restoring Tigray’s territory, and reinstating the legal status of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). They also emphasized the need for facilitating the safe return of displaced persons.
In a joint statement, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to the African Union Walter Parrs expressed encouragement regarding Obasanjo’s engagement. The diplomats emphasized that the safe and dignified return of displaced populations should be a priority for all leaders and noted that such an objective would require compromise.
