Tigray-Ethiopia mediation tensions

Overview

Tigray leadership has expressed growing dissatisfaction with African Union mediation efforts led by High Representative Olusegun Obasanjo. Following a visit to Mekelle in late August, Tigray authorities reported that the mission yielded “no new proposals or evidence of tangible progress” from the Ethiopian Federal Government.

The administration outlined several preconditions for resuming formal dialogue, including the lifting of an economic blockade, ending a military siege, restoring Tigray’s territory, and reinstating the legal status of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

By early September, the Tigray administration intensified its criticism, accusing Obasanjo of failing to show a “clear commitment” to mediation and questioning the neutrality of the process. The administration further argued that the implementation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement has been left primarily to the Federal Government. Despite these grievances, Tigray officials stated they remain committed to a time-bound dialogue to achieve peace.
