Mexico utility failures trigger water and power crises

Electrical supply failures by the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) are causing significant water shortages and power instability across multiple regions in Mexico.

In Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito, intermittent power and low voltage have disrupted water pumping operations. The Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Tijuana (CESPT) reported that these issues primarily affect high-altitude areas. Residents in neighborhoods such as Planicie, Valle Verde, and Villa del Campo have reported prolonged outages and water shortages, with some citizens noting damage to household appliances due to voltage fluctuations.

In Saltillo, Coahuila, Mayor Javier Díaz González has demanded that CFE guarantee sufficient energy to operate water wells. Electrical failures have impacted approximately 200 neighborhoods, affecting an estimated 300,000 residents. The mayor noted that the city has experienced 77 blackouts between 2025 and early 2026, highlighting a recurring need for improved electrical infrastructure to prevent industrial and domestic disruptions.
