Utility service disruptions in Latin America
Overview
Utility services in Latin America have faced various disruptions involving electricity and water supplies due to maintenance and technical issues.
In August, electrical service disruptions were reported in Argentina and Mexico. In Argentina, power outages occurred in Tartagal due to a 132 kV line failure, while other regions like Córdoba and Santa Fe experienced planned interruptions for smart meter installation, network maintenance, and conductor replacement. In Mexico, maintenance on public lighting poles was conducted in Yauhquemehcan to improve service.
By September, reports shifted to water service disruptions in El Salvador and Argentina. In El Salvador, the Administración Nacional de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (ANDA) announced that electrical work on the Zona Norte System would cause service deficiencies in parts of San Salvador and surrounding areas. In Argentina, Sociedad Aguas del Tucumán (SAT) reported that maintenance on the El Cadillal Aqueduct could lead to decreased water pressure in San Miguel de Tucumán, though water tankers would be used to supply major hospitals.
In mid-September, Mexico experienced a crisis where electrical supply failures by the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) triggered water shortages. In Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito, intermittent power and low voltage disrupted water pumping operations, particularly in high-altitude neighborhoods like Planicie, Valle Verde, and Villa del Campo. Additionally, in Saltillo, Coahuila, electrical failures impacted approximately 200 neighborhoods and an estimated 300,000 residents. Mayor Javier Díaz González has demanded that CFE guarantee sufficient energy to operate water wells following a series of blackouts.
