Luis Miranda Contreras arrested for leading AI-powered extortion ring
Authorities in Mexico have dismantled a criminal network led by Luis Miranda Contreras, a former Secretary of Finance and Administration for Michoacán. The group operated out of a residence in the La Providencia residential area in Metepec, State of Mexico.
The network specialized in extortion and identity theft, targeting politicians, public officials, and business owners. To enhance their deception, the group allegedly used artificial intelligence to clone the voices of high-ranking figures, including officials from the Presidency, the Supreme Court, and various state and municipal governments.
Investigators found that the group used long-standing political and administrative relationships to obtain personal contact information. They would initially contact victims posing as personal assistants to build trust before using cloned voices to demand money for political operations, job placements, or government contracts. Five individuals were arrested, including Miranda Contreras, his wife, two children, and an escort. All suspects have been linked to the process and placed under justified preventive detention.
