Tijuana opens Otay I-Otay II bypass to optimize cargo transport

The National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) has opened a new 5.8-kilometer bypass connecting the Otay I and Otay II border crossings in Tijuana, Baja California. The project aims to optimize freight transport and reduce vehicular congestion in urban areas.

The bypass began phased operations on October 19, 2026, initially allowing the circulation of empty vehicles. Following hydraulic concrete improvements, the route is expected to accommodate loaded cargo units by late October or early November. Federico Serrano Bañuelos, president of Index Zona Costa BC, noted that the route will help alleviate traffic on Bellas Artes Boulevard and strengthen the manufacturing export supply chain.

Operational guidelines for cargo operators include a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour. The bypass operates Monday through Friday from 06:00 to 00:00, with split shifts on weekends from 06:00 to 14:00 and 21:00 to 00:00.
