Tijuana opens Otay I–Otay II bypass for cargo transport

Starting October 19, cargo transport will begin using the new 5.8-kilometer Libramiento Otay I – Otay II bypass to facilitate movement between the Otay I and Otay II border crossings in Tijuana. The initiative, supported by the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM), aims to reduce vehicular congestion and streamline freight transport toward the United States.

The implementation will occur in two stages: initially, only empty cargo units will be permitted to circulate, followed by loaded trailers starting October 30. The route begins at the Alberto Limón Padilla Boulevard distributor, passing through the Otay II customs access viaduct and connecting to Avenida Internacional to reach the Otay I international crossing. A speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour will be enforced, and overnight stays within the fiscal precinct are prohibited.

Operating hours for the bypass are scheduled from 06:00 to 00:00 on weekdays, and on weekends from 06:00 to 14:00 and 21:00 to 00:00. This infrastructure utilizes the Mexican side of the Otay II customs facility while the United States completes its side of the border crossing, which is projected for completion in 2028.
